Born in the summer of 2024, this painting is a celebration of shared meals, a staple of the Indonesian culture in which I was raised. Having moved between several different countries, I’ve realised that a great deal can be learned from a community’s perspectives on food—how it is shared (or not shared), the rituals that surround it, and the spaces it creates for social interactions. Even as I adapt to the different cultures that I’ve been exposed to, the act of sharing and experiencing food as a communal activity has stuck with me through the years. As Christopher McCandless’ famous quote goes; “Happiness only real when shared”. A feast is only a feast when shared.
